Majestic Care of Lakin emerged as the largest nursing home in Mason County during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.
The facility had 136 beds available, 18 more than the county’s average for the quarter, and served an average of 59.3 residents over the period.
The CMS gave Majestic Care of Lakin an overall rating of 1 out of 5, which is below the West Virginia nursing home average of 2.9.
Pleasant Valley Healthcare Center was the county’s second largest nursing home for the quarter, offering 100 beds.
By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Majestic Care of Lakin had incurred one fine totaling $45,694 and faced one penalty.
Mason County, West Virginia, had only one public nursing home in total.
Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the country’s older adult population continues its growth while the number of younger residents falls. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and up increased by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult population nationwide has grown steeply over the past century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that close to half of people in this age group—about 28 million—may eventually rely on long-term services and support, with more than one-third potentially needing nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
