U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older adult population in the country continues to rise as the number of younger individuals declines. From 2020 to 2024, Americans 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s senior population has surged over the past century, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
Research published in 2021 indicates about 28 million people—nearly half of Americans in this age group—are expected to need long-term services and support. The analysis also estimates that more than one-third could ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” Jesse Slome said, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an education group for the insurance industry. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
