This week in Ohio Valley history.

Died on November 2, 1973, with ties to Parkersburg

Alfred Earle “Greasy” Neale died on November 2, 1973, in Lake Worth Beach, Florida. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1891. He played professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds and helped win the 1919 World Series. He also played professional football and coached several college teams, including West Virginia Wesleyan and Washington & Jefferson. In the NFL, he coached the Philadelphia Eagles from 1941 to 1950. His teams won championships in 1948 and 1949. Neale was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1967 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969. He spent parts of his coaching and playing career in West Virginia and maintained ties to the region throughout his life. He was buried in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. His contributions to football and baseball are still acknowledged. Parkersburg remains a key part of his story.
