Worthington Healthcare Center was identified as the second-largest nursing home in Wood County during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility offered 105 beds, surpassing the county average by five beds for the same period. On average, it served 90.2 residents throughout the quarter.

The CMS assigned Worthington Healthcare Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, trailing the statewide average rating of 2.9 for West Virginia nursing homes.

In comparison, Eagle Pointe Healthcare Center led the county in size for the quarter with 164 available beds, while Willows Center placed third at 97 beds.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Worthington Healthcare Center had incurred one fine totaling $104,142 and received two penalties.

Wood County contained five for-profit nursing homes during this period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the nation’s older adult population is expanding, while younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans aged 65 and older rose by 13%, whereas those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the older adult population has seen notable growth, increasing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 report found that about half of this age group, nearly 28 million people, may need long-term services and support. The report also estimates that more than one-third of these older adults are likely to require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
